Find Out More About Adopting A Child

Information events during National Adoption Week

Merton Council is holding a series of information events to mark this year’s National Adoption Week, which is from the 19-25 October.

The information evenings will take place on:

Tuesday 20 October, Strawberry Lodge, Carshalton, 6.30pm – 8pm

Friday 23 October, Merton Civic Centre, Morden, 11am – 1pm

Friday 30 October, Merton Civic Centre, Morden, 11am – 1pm.

At the meetings, visitors will have the chance to hear from other adopters about their experience and the process of becoming an adopter. Social workers will also be on hand to talk about:

  • Why children become looked after and those currently waiting for adoptive families
  • The myths and preconceptions about adoption
  • What you can expect from the assessment process
  • What contact with birth families involves
  • Post adoption support services

This year’s theme is ‘Too old at four’. Highlighting the fact that older children waiting to be adopted are often likely to be part of a sibling group or have additional needs.

The council is also in need of parents to come forward for children with complex needs and those from black and minority ethnic families. Merton will be working with Kingston, Richmond and Sutton boroughs to highlight the plight of these vulnerable children whilst helping them find suitable families.

Merton’s cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Maxi Martin, said: “Every child deserves to grow up in a loving home and this National Adoption Week we are appealing to parents who can provide this for our looked after children. The information evenings are an opportunity for those interested to get a break down of what adopting involves and the support available to them.”
