MP Visit For Merton's New Fire Centre

Base can respond to terror attacks

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, together with Councillors Debbie Shears, David Simpson and Diane Neill Mills, has recently visited the new Merton Fire Control centre.

The centre will co-ordinate the activities of the London Fire Brigade but will also act as 'Gold Command' in case of the need for emergency procedures to respond to incidents such as terrorist attacks.

The building in Morden has been built to high specifications to ensure internal resilience, so much so, that it could operate for seven days on a 'shut down' basis if necessary.

Stephen Hammond (pictured far left with Councillors Shears, Simpson and Neill Mills) said: "This is an extremely impressive new control centre for London Fire Brigade and could, if necessary, control the whole of the country from here. It will also play a major role in the emergency back up to the Olympics".
