Plans follow residents' plea
A new light-controlled pedestrian crossing is set to be installed at the junction of Haydons Road and Kohat Road in Wimbledon.
The work to create the new crossing will be carried out this summer, subject to formal agreement from Transport for London and agreement of the capital programme at Merton Council on March 2.
The decision to install the crossing has been made after the council responded to the road safety concerns of residents following the removal of a previous crossing from the area by TfL in April 2009.
The road where the new crossing is to be located will be narrowed to reduce the crossing distance and help slow traffic speeds in this area.
Councillor Andrew Judge, Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, said: "We appreciate the concerns many residents in this area have had following the removal of a pedestrian crossing some time ago. Having listened to their concerns about road safety on Haydon's Road, we have worked very hard with Transport for London to come to an agreed location for a new crossing."
Richard Tracey, London Assembly member, has been negotiating with TfL on behalf of residents. He said: "I am pleased for worried residents and parents that this is going ahead. I received a number of messages and took up the concerns with TfL and the council."
