List of recyclable items is expanded
Merton can now recycle more in the borough after the council expanded the range of materials that can be recycled.
The following items can also be recycled:
· Plastic containers (tubs, pots and trays) – margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, fruit and vegetable punnets, meat trays and ready meal food trays, and ice-cream tubs
· Empty aerosols – cleaning products, deodorants, shaving foams and other aerosol cans
· Tin and aluminium foil – clean kitchen foil and metal takeaway meal containers
Residents are currently recycling more than 37% of household rubbish by using their home collection bins. More than 16,000 tonnes of dry recyclables are taken to the waste sorting site at Crayford in Dartford – this site is owned by Viridor, the council's contractor for recycling waste from households and businesses in Merton.
In addition, residents can also dispose of their rubbish by using the recycling and reuse centre at Garth Road. There are also dual litter and recycling bins in town centres across Merton and neighbourhood recycling sites.
Merton Council's cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: "We want to help residents recycle as much as possible, which is why we've expanded our recycling service. This will help people recycle even more of their household packaging, including food containers, tin and aluminium foil.
"We need to send even less rubbish to landfill to protect our environment and to lessen our landfill tax burden. Although we are looking to build a new energy from waste recovery facility, we are still looking at new ways to maximise the amount of waste we recycle in Merton."
