New Pavilion For Local Recreation Ground

Wimbledon MP to open new facility

A new pavilion at South Wimbledon's Abbey Recreation Ground will be officially opened by Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond on Saturday October 29.

The new pavilion at the rec, on Morden Road, includes new changing rooms for four teams, referee's room, showers, toilets, kitchen/meeting room, new car park surfacing, an eco-friendly Sedum roof and an external CCTV camera.

The opening ceremony has been organised by the Willmore End Residents Association (WERA) who secured £250,000 in external grants (£150,000 from London Marathon and £100,000 from Viridor Credits) towards the project.

Merton Council provided the remainder of the funding to complete and manage the project. The construction work started in May 2011 and was completed in early October.

Abbey Ward councillors, Merton council officers, Fund Trustees, local police and residents will all be coming along to the opening event, which takes place at 10.30am. Members of the public are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
