Wimbledon MP opens new facility

Residents and councillors gathered in South Wimbledon for the official opening of the new sports pavilion.
 
The new building at Abbey Recreation ground on Morden Road was opened on Saturday (October 29) by Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond, and will offer four new changing rooms and leisure space.
 
The new building also includes a separate area for officials changing, a meeting room and kitchen. The pavilion features an eco-friendly sedum roof with light tubes and has under floor heating throughout. It is also covered by CCTV.
 
The total cost of the new pavilion was £360,000 with £110,000 provided by Merton Council. Further funding came from The London Marathon Fund (£150,000) and Viridor Credits (£100,000).

Abdul Latif, Chair of Willmore End Residents Association (WERA) said: "This funding was excellent news for the local community. Merton Council and WERA deserve credit for their hard work in making this happen.

"Previously WERA raised a total sum of £93,000 of grants from the same two Funds to reconstruct disused tennis courts in adjoining Nursery Road Playing Fields. The new tennis courts are free for the public to use. Recently WERA has also planted over 2,000 tree saplings in the area."

Mr Hammond (pictured left at the opening) said: "This is truly a local project for local people in the local community. I would like to congratulate WERA for the hard work they have undertaken in seeing this project  to completion. It is their hard work which will benefit the local community.

"This project was very special as local companies and local people were used in building and procuring the new Pavilion. I am delighted that all has been completed and it was a pleasure in opening the building."
