New Year Reveller Attacked

Merton attack victim taken to intensive care

A Merton New Year reveller had to be taken to intensive care after he was beaten unconscious as he walked home.

The attack took place at 3am on Sunday (January 1) at the junction of Cannon Hill Lane and Cherrywood Lane in Morden.

The 21-year-old victim was walking with friends after a night out celebrating the New Year when they became aware of two men walking near them.

First they were verbally abused by one suspect, then the victim was kicked and fell to the ground. The second suspect punched the man in the head, and kicked him in the head whilst he lay in the ground, causing him to lose consciousness.

Both suspects then made off. Two other people passing by came to help, and put the victim in the recovery position.

Police were called and attended the scene directly. The victim was taken to hospital and an immediate initial investigation and scene search was conducted.

The victim sustained serious head injuries, including a 95% hearing loss, fractured skull and a bleed to his brain, requiring intensive medical care. He is now said to be doing well, but is still in hospital.

Detective Sergeant Trevor Struthers, Merton CID, said: "This was a violent and senseless attack on a young man just enjoying a night out with friends. He has sustained potentially life-changing injuries, and we are very keen to arrest the two offenders who attacked him.

"I'd also like to ask the two people who came to help to come forward and speak to us. Their courage in helping a person in distress, not knowing what had happened, is commendable."
