Merton Will Not Buy Olympic Tickets

Ceremony plans are reversed

Plans for Merton to spend £3,980 on Olympic tickets for Merton's Mayor for 2012 have been reversed.

The council was criticised for a cross-party decision to take up an option to buy two pairs of tickets for the 2012 Mayor and consort to attend the opening and closing ceremonies.

Following the reaction, as well as the disappointment felt by many who weren't able to purchase tickets themselves, it has changed its mind.

Councillor Stephen AlambritisCouncillor Stephen Alambritis (left), Leader of Merton Council, said: "Merton Council has decided not to purchase any tickets for the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.

"As a host borough for next year’s Games we had expressed an interest that Merton's Mayor for 2012 should attend these events.

"However, we recognise the understandable concerns our residents have about where the council should spend its limited finances and, combined with the disappointment faced by many who have applied for tickets to attend Olympic events, we have decided not to go ahead with purchasing them."
