Environmental Initiative Gets Council Backing

'One Planet' living to be investigated

An environmental initiative called 'One Planet' is to be considered by Merton borough council.

'One planet living' is a vision of a sustainable world in which people everywhere can enjoy a high quality of life within the productive capacity of the planet.

In his speech introducing the motion to the full council meeting on Wednesday (April 2), Lib Dem lead councillor Iain Dysart, said we need to reduce our ecological footprint by two-thirds in order to establish a fairer use of global resources.

He said if everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK we would need three planets to support us.

The One Planet initiative, developed by local eco-organisation BioRegional and WWF, will bring environmental considerations to the heart of Merton Council activity and provide an opportunity to develop environmental partnerships with organisations, businesses and residents across the borough.

The motion calls on the Council Cabinet to investigate the opportunity and to report back by the end of 2014.

"We are delighted that we have been able to get this key environmental initiative approved by the Council. In getting involved in the One Planet programme we will be joining a growing global community committed to improving our environment and respecting our resources," said Iain Dysart.
