Recital To Mark Church Organ's Return Is Postponed

Event called off, but will be rescheduled

A recital to mark the completion of a mammoth project to repair the historic organ at Wimbledon's Sacred Heart Church has been postponed.

The organ (right), which has been re-built, is one of the finest parish church organs in Britain. It dates back to 1912 following a generous donation from a parishioner.

Although some changes were made to the organ in 1935, some cleaning and other restorative work done in the early 1970s, and in 1985 urgent repair work, it is now having work done that should ensure it lasts another 100 years.

To mark its return to the church in Edge Hill, the May 28 recital was to be given by Oliver Latry, organist at Notre Dame in Paris.

But organisers have announced the event has been postponed because of circumstances beyond their control.
