International Peace Ribbon Comes To Wimbledon

Wimbledon Vigil for Peace event

The Wimbledon Vigil for Peace is playing host to a section of the international Peace Ribbon tomorrow (August 7).

The ribbon consists of panels of cloth, each creatively decorated by individual women. The idea originated inm the USA more than 30 years ago when there were huge ribbon displays in Washington and at the UN, and has since spread around the world.

The panels which will be on display tomorrow (August 7) include embroidery and applique by local activists and some historic panels originating from the Greenham Common peace camp.

"It is a reminder that our weekly witness for peace is part of a global campaign," said Maisie Carter who has been a regular at the vigil since it was founded in the aftermath of 9/11.

"We are determined to show that a better world is possible," said Maisie. "Violence solves nothing in the long run and governments must find other ways to tackle the world's problems."

The ribbon will be in St Mark's Place from 6pm-7pm.
