Life Peerage For Wimbledon Councillor
Tories and Mayor congratulate Tariq Ahmad
Wimbledon Park Councillor, Tariq Ahmad, has been given an life peerage, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced.
Councillor Ahmad (left) is also vice-chairman of the Conservative Party, specialising in cities, and has been a local councillor since 2002.
He has served as the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association's (AMA) national vice-president since 2003.
Councillor Ahmad, who will be enobled as "Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon", has also been recognised for his experience and contribution as a businessman and his roles in the voluntary sector.
Councillor Debbie Shears, Leader of the Conservative opposition in Merton, said: "I was extremely pleased to learn that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to confer a life peerage on Tariq.
"He is a very well respected colleague and member of Merton Council and this honour is thoroughly deserved. I have no doubt he will work tirelessly in the House of Lords for the good of our country.
"On behalf of all Conservative councillors here in Merton, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Tariq and his family."
Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, added: "This is great news. I was absolutely delighted to learn that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to confer a life peerage on Tariq.
"I have worked with Tariq for many years and know him both as a friend and colleague to be a man of integrity and talent. I have full confidence that he will continue to work diligently for the benefit of everyone and our country in the House of Lords."
Councillor Oonagh Moulton, the Mayor of Merton, also paid tribute to him: "This is wonderful news and as the First Citizen I have sent Councillor Ahmad congratulations on behalf of the residents of our borough and Merton Council. He will I am sure have an illustrious career in the House of Lords and one which in Merton we can all be proud of," she said.
