Time For Local Young People To Get Snapping

Finale of photo competition takes place in Wimbledon

Whether you are a budding professional photographer or a mobile phone snapper with a good eye for a picture, all young people are invited to take part in YMCA LSW's annual youth photography competition this spring.

This year's theme is My Community – Beyond the Surface and the competition is running from now until May 4.

The photographs entered will be judged on creativity as much as technical merit and the photos can be submitted in two categories; photos taken with a mobile phone camera and photos taken with a regular camera.

It's completely free to enter and the competition is open to anyone under the age of 18 who lives, studies or works in the Boroughs of Merton, Kingston or Richmond.

The photographs will be judged by professional photographers as well as staff from YMCA London South West. Included amongst the prizes are an annual gym membership, vouchers for meals out, bowling, goodies from Tiger store in Kingston and an exhibition of the young people's work.

The winners will be announced at ROOM Exposed, YMCA LSW's open event night at the John Innes Youth Centre in Kingston Road, Wimbledon, which will take place on May 9 and where the photos submitted to the competition will be exhibited.

Candice Dunne, You Fund Co-ordinator at YMCA LSW, said: "We are always blown away by the creativity and enthusiasm of the young people we work with, and being a charity with firm roots in all three Boroughs, we would love to know what young people find inspirational in their communities and the local environment.

Hence we have chosen "My Community – Beyond the Surface" as the theme for this year’s competition. We ask that all photos are taken in and around the local community, and that entrants give us an outline as to where and why this photo is important to them”.

Throughout February, March and April, YMCA LSW will be posting fortnightly updates on their website and Facebook page, showcasing the submitted entries.
