Burglary Suspect Arrested After 999 call

Praise for alert South Wimbledon residents

A suspected burglar was arrested minutes after a South Wimbledon home was raided after alert residents dialled 999.

The burglary had taken place on a weekday afternoon at a house in Hayward Close, when a glass pane in the back door was smashed. The thief stole a number of electrical items and ran off into the street.

Police were immediately called and were securing the scene when they were alerted to a nearby location where a suspicious man had been seen.

A 29-year-old man was detained and arrested, as police found an amount of property in his possession, including two lap tops and a games console, amongst other items. He was taken to a South London police station after his arrest, which took place on Wednesday September 28.

Acting Detective Inspector Teresa Foster, Merton Burglary and Robbery Team (BRIT) said: "Thanks to local people not hesitating to call 999 when they have seen someone acting suspiciously, and the rapid response of both uniformed and detective colleagues to the scene, a suspect is now in custody, and a full investigation continues."
