Town reaches final of the Great British High Street competition
Residents are being urged to vote for Raynes Park to win the high street of the year award as part of the annual Great British High Street Competition.
Raynes Park has made it to the final three in the London category with the judging panel impressed with the work of local resident groups and businesses who in partnership with the council have seen improvements to the area. These include new wider pavements, tree planting, a pedestrian and cycle route and retail and leisure developments.
There were a record 230 applications across seven categories, with 21 making the final cut. Finalists will receive a visit from an expert judge with the panel including representatives from Boots, Costa, Marks and Spencer, the Post Office, Good and Argos. The winning street will receive a share of the £80,000 prize and expert training from Google’s training taskforce for its shops, bars and restaurants.
Leader of Merton, Councillor Stephen Alambritis, said: “This is great news for Raynes Park. To make the final shortlist is no mean feat, but we need all residents to vote so we can win! The high street has a mixture of independent and chain stores and active residents and business associations that work closely with us and deserve national recognition.”
