Historic Wimbledon Stables Threatened With Closure

Lease on Ridgway Stables is coming to an end

An historic stables in Wimbledon is threatened with closure as the lease with its landlord is due to come to an end.

Ridgway Stables is due to shut on September 28, and there are fears the site could be redeveloped for housing.

More than 6,000 people have now signed a petition to save the stables on Ridgway, which date back to the 1860s.

It has been run by Julia Hardy since the 1980s, and was a riding school for many years before that.

She said: "I feel very strongly if the stables go they will be lost forever for future generations of local children."

Her riding school, which doesn't require any membership fee, runs classes for adults and children.

It supports various programmes during the school holidays, including Merton Active and Camp Beaumont as well as running a year-round Saturday Club.

But if the stables is evicted on September 28, its 15 horses and ponies would have to be re-homed.
