Pink Knitting Parade In Wimbledon

Anti-nuclear weapons event in town centre

Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition/CND and friends will roll out the Wimbledon section of a 7-mile Aldermaston to Burghfield pink scarf on Saturday (June 28) before taking it down to Aldermaston on Nagasaki Day (August 9).

The aim is to to draw public attention to the two British nuclear weapons establishments.

The assembly point is Compton Road behind Wimbledon Library at 10.30am on June 28.

The procession will start at 11am and go down Wimbledon Broadway as far as the Theatre, returning on the other side of the road.

"This is a big day for us", said Joanna Bazley, Secretary of WDC/CND and coordinator of the project.

"We have no idea how long our bit of scarf is and we can't wait to find out. But we have a serious purpose: The government plans to spend £100billion on a new generation of UK nuclear weapons and we want to make sure everybody is aware of what is going on".

In the evening WDC/CND will host a music and poetry event at William Morris Halls, 267 The Broadway, entitled 'No Glory in War'. 7.30pm, admission £5.
