Wimbledon schools receive awards

Four primary schools in Wimbledon have been awarded a Primary Science Quality Mark in recognition of raising the profile of science teaching in their schools.

The Marks have been given to the following Primaries: Dundonald in Dundonald Road; Poplar in Poplar Road South; Garfield in Garfield Road; Priory in Queens Road.

They achieved the PSQM status after following a rigorous process set by the Association for Science Education (ASE) in which co-ordinators at each school had to gain a thorough understanding of science teaching.

Local hub leader and mentor Fiona Sydney explained that the science co-ordinators had to work with all teachers in their schools on the teaching of science across the board.

She said: "Part of it was making science visible in the school, with posters, competitions and science clubs. The process is very interactive. Science should be enjoyable, as well as about learning.

"The idea is that the schools should carry on with the work, so it is an on-going project. We also want to get more schools interested."

The schools received their certificates from Annette Smith, chief executive of the ASE (pictured above at the presenation). The science co-ordinators are: Dundonald  Primary - Chris Gibson; Poplar Primary - Claire Johnson; Garfield Primary - Chloe Buck; Priory Primary - Alan Smyth.
