Silver For Wimbledon Fencer In Birmingham

Success in épée championships

Wimbledon épéeist Marco Russo travelled to Birmingham on Saturday November 14 to compete in the Cocks Moors Woods Épée Championships épée championships at Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre.

As an unranked fencer he had quite a tough poule round but won four bouts 5-4, 54, 5-1 and 5-2 only losing to 5-3 to Alessandro Giovannone.

This put him in 11th place after the poule round, and in the next round he had a first DE and won it 15-0. He then took on Paul Willmott from Northampton.

He beat Paul 15-9, and then was up against the number 6 seed Will Gallimore-Tallen who he defeated 15-12 only to find himself up against number three seed Alessandro Giovannone again.

This time he won comfortably 15-7 making it through to the last four. It wasn't going to be easy though as he now faced number 2 seed Richard Hall but Marco was in confident form and won 15-10 getting through to the final with former British champion and current Commonwealth Veteran's épée gold medalist Chris Howser.

In an exciting climax to the event Chris defeated Marco 15-7 to win gold but Marco says he is delighted to have come away with silver in his first ever British national open competition and is now looking forward to the Leon Paul open in Hendon on the 28th.
