Marking Small Business Saturday In Wimbledon

Council leader will be serving local customers

Merton is again following in the footsteps of an iinitiative from America this year to encourage people to shop at and support local independent firms.

Small Business Saturday has been a feature of the American people's shopping experience since 2010 and takes place on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Following the success of Small Business Saturday in Merton last year, Merton Council Leader, Councillor Stephen Alambritis will be serving the public in small businesses in Wimbledon and elsewhere in the borough.

The UK version of Small Business Saturday is set for December 6, which according to retail experts is one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Councillor Alambritis, said: "Local high streets and small businesses are a hub for our communities and research shows that every £1 spent with a local small business means that 63p is re-spent locally. I would encourage everyone to shop in our small businesses during the festive season, particularly on Small Business Saturday. As well as providing good service and value, our local small businesses are a lovely place to shop and offer great variety.”

Councillor Alambritis, who was formally with the Federation of Small Businesses, will be serving shoppers at a number of small firms dotted around the borough throughout the day and will listen to customer feedback about their shopping experience in Merton.

Merton has recently been recognised as a borough that supports small businesses through its recent Best All Round Small Business Friendly Borough award win.

He will be serving the public in the following SW19-based businesses on Saturday December 6:

    • 11am – 12pm Coffee in the Wood – 99 High Street Colliers Wood
    • 3pm – 4pm Fielders in Wimbledon town centre.
