Fire Breaks Out At South Wimbledon Cafe

Firefighters tackle breakfast-time blaze

A woman was taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a cafe in South Wimbledon today (Monday August 22).

Firefighters were called to the Recanto do Brasil restaurant in Merton Road at 8.07am.

Four fire engines from Wimbledon, New Malden, Tooting and Mitcham and 20 firefighters tackled the blaze, which they got under control by 8.51am.

The Brazilian cafe has flats above it, and three people had escaped before the fire brigade arrived.

One woman was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting with back pain.

The incident caused rush-hour traffic problems around the busy crossroads junction with the A238 Kingston Road, and Merton Road (A219) itself was closed for a while.
