Stephen Hammond Loses London Tory Job After Brexit Rebellion

He was one of the Conservative rebels to back Euro amendment

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond has been sacked from his role as Conservative Vice Chairman for London after voting against the Government in tonight's Brexit bill.

MPs voted by 309 votes to 305 to give Parliament a legal guarantee of a vote on the final Brexit deal agreed with the EU.

Mr Hammond, who has been MP for Wimbledon since 2005, was one of 11 Conservative MPs who backed the amendment put forward by Tory Dominic Grieve.

He tweeted afterwards: "Tonight I put my country and constituency before party and voted with my principles to give Parliament a meaningful vote.

"Very disappointed to no longer be Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party for London. It was a huge honour and I'll continue to campaign across our capital in the run-up to the borough elections next year."
