Wimbledon Cake Artist Recreates Story Book Characters


Edible confectionary characters are now on the road

Wimbledon-based cake artist Jacqui Kelly was commissioned by the Cake and Bake Show to recreate some of the most popular children's story book characters in cake.

Jacqui Kelly of Totally Sugar, who works out of the Wimbledon Art Studios, created the confectionery creations for the Cake and Bake Show London, which took place at the beginning of the October.

They were a hit with more than 27,000 visitors to the show as well as with some well known celebrity chefs, including Rosemary Shrager (pictured right with Jacqui).

The edible confectionery characters are now about to hit the road! They will be taking centre stage at the Cake and Bake shows in Edinburgh on 30 October - November 1 and in Manchester on November 12-15.  

Her oversized 'story-telling armchair' is surrounded by life-sized sugar crafted characters including Paddington Bear, Grandma Wolf, Jack and The Beanstalk, The Gruffalo, Cinderellas Pumpkin carriage, a Harry Porter spell book, wand and Wizards hat,The Hungry Caterpillar and Mother Goose.

Cake facts

  • It took 4 weeks - around 340 hours to make all the characters
  • 72kg of Renshaws Sugarpaste was used to make the characters
  • Including 14kg of Renshaws Chocolate paste on the Gruffalo alone.
  • The characters contain a mixture of cakes - including Vanilla cake, Toffee cake, Ginger cake and Chocolate cake 
  • The characters also contain rice krispie treats, rocky road and tiffin cake for the more structural elements
  • 9kg of chocolate, and 3 litres of double cream and 20kg of buttercream was used to create the characters
  • The characters have with polystyrene bases supplied by Dummies Direct to help with transportation between the shows
  • The life-size Grandma Wolf stands at 5ft 8in.
