Agreement as part of licensing conditions
A Tesco in Merton has agreed not to sell super-strength beer, lagers or ciders of 5.5% and above on its premises as part of terms of gaining its license from the council to sell alcohol.
The agreement came after a recommendation from Merton Police in a bid to prevent crime, disorder and public nuisance after Tesco submitted its application for an alcohol license for its new store on Streatham Road, Mitcham, to Merton's Licensing Authority.
The Licensing Sub-Committee agreed to impose similar conditions in June at the request of the Police Licensing Officer, Sgt Peter Sparham, for the new Sainsburys stores in Grand Drive and Morden Road.
Chair of Merton’s Licensing Committee, Councillor David Simpson, said: "It is good that Tesco has agreed to the conditions placed on its alcohol license. This is a first for a Tesco in Merton and we hope the result will be less anti-social behaviour in the borough."
Cabinet member for community safety, engagement and equalities, Councillor Edith Macauley said: "While Merton is one of the safest boroughs in London, anti-social behaviour remains a concern to residents. This decision by Tesco will help keep this type of behaviour down and I am pleased they have agreed to it."
