Borough's schools are the best performing in England for GCSEs and A levels
Revised figures show Merton schools continue to be the top performing in the country for GCSEs and A levels. This comes as 100% of secondary schools in the borough continue to be judged good or outstanding by Ofsted.
The revised Progress 8 scores, published this week by the Department for Education, show the progress pupils make between the end of Key Stage 2 and the end of Key Stage 4 compared to other teenagers across England who achieved similar results at the end of Key Stage 2.
The score is based on results in up to eight qualifications including English, maths, three English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages and three other additional approved qualifications. Schools are given a score above or below zero to indicate whether pupils are progressing above or below the national average. This is combined to give an overall local authority score.
Overall, Merton had a well above average score of 0.51 which in light of the revised figures continues to rank Merton schools first in the country, outperforming all other boroughs.
Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Caroline Cooper-Marbiah said: “We are making Merton a great place for families, and I am enormously proud that Merton’s state schools are officially the best in the country for pupil progress, a testament to the hard work of all our teaching staff and pupils.
“A record number of families are choosing our schools – over 250 more compared to last year. This is great news, and means the need for our brand new school in South Wimbledon is more urgent than ever. We want as many Merton children as possible to benefit from an excellent education close to where they live.”
