Social Worker Barbara Reaches National Final

Recognition for local worker

Merton Council social worker, Barbara Doh-Nani, has been shortlisted for a Social Worker of the Year Award.

Barbara was selected as a contender for the finals in the Team Leader of the Year – Children's Services category.

She was shortlisted in recognition of the support she, along with her team, has given to young people over the age of 16 who need the councils services because they are looked after or are leaving care.

Her work results in young people showing steady improvement, continuing in education, remaining in their foster placements and taking up a variety of work and apprenticeship opportunities.

The awards ceremony and special reception will be at the end of November at the House of Commons.  Barbara will have the opportunity to ask the judging panel of experts questions about the future of the social work profession.  She will also have a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster.

Merton Council cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Maxi Martin said: "This is wonderful recognition for one of our dedicated members of staff. Social work is both challenging and rewarding, and Barbara brings the best to the profession. She ensures she gets to know each young person as an individual and is available for our young people to speak to and seek advice from. An inspiring team leader, Barbara also knows what it’s like working in the front line."

Barbara Doh-Nani said: "I am thrilled and proud to be shortlisted. There are many dedicated people who work in social work across the country, and it's great that my work has been recognised in this way. The people who work in my team are important to me and the young people we work with make it all worthwhile. Im keeping my fingers crossed for the final."
