Guided Heritage Walk Of Wimbledon At War

Merton at War walk with First World War associations

As part of the Carved in Stone project, Heritage staff are organising a free guided walk around the Wimbledon area on Saturday August 27 (10am–1pm, including tea-break).

This will highlight local sites with First World War associations – from the homes of local combatants and VCs, to recruitment venues, military training grounds, locations linked to refugee communities, women’s war work and famous wartime poets.

As part of the event, participants can also discover the life stories of a range of Wimbledon combatants and visit the Museum of Wimbledon, which holds a large collection of First World War documents. There will also be a break for refreshments in one of the cafes in Wimbledon Village.

The Wimbledon at War walk covers 2.5 miles and includes a short bus journey.

Starting point: The front steps of Wimbledon Theatre, The Broadway, Wimbledon, SW19 1QG

Finishing point: Museum of Wimbledon, 22 Ridgway, Wimbledon, London SW19 4QN.

To book a place on the walk, phone 020 8545 32 39/4038 or email: local.studies@merton.gov.uk.
