Town Centre Car Park Will Be Up For Sale

Hotel development could replace parking

A Wimbledon town centre car park is set to be put up for sale to developers wanting to build on the site.

Merton borough council has announced plans to sell the car park it owns behind New Wimbledon Theatre, on The Broadway and Russell Road.

The sale plans go to its Cabinet next month, but if it goes through, there will then be a tender process for bidders interested in developing on the land.

Council leader Stephen Alambritis pointed out that there is a lack of hotel accommodation in Wimbledon, but the scheme could feature retail and leisure facilities, as well as other residential accommodation.

He said the car park earns around £220,000 for the council each year, and there are other town centre parking facilities available for car drivers in the town centre.

"There are a dearth of hotels in Wimbledon. We plan to put this out to formal tender with a view of a development for 'mixed use' and will see what the bidders have to say," he said.

Any subsequent scheme would go through the normal planning process, with opportunity for local consultation. It's likely the car park will remain open for at least another year while the plans progress.
