Alert Over Wimbledon Cashpoint Crime

Police warning about town centre thefts

Police in Wimbledon have warned thieves are targeting people using cashpoint machines in the town centre.

They are thought to be paying most attention to the series of machines at the Alexandra Road and St George's Road junction.

They usually watch people enter their PIN numbers, then one will distract the card holder while another thief grabs the card.

Police in the Hillside Safer Neighbourhoods Team are working with the banks and have increased both uniformed and plain clothes patrols in the area.

Sgt Tony Oram said: "Please be careful when using the machines. Do not let yourself get distracted when using the machine, ensure that you cover your hand when inputting the pin number and check the machine for suspicious devices. Please report suspicious activity to the bank and/or police."
