Prize for school as part of recycling campaign
Wimbledon Chase Primary School have been presented with a £2,000 cheque after winning the third prize award during Merton's Mega Recycle campaign.
Through the Mega Recycle competition, 206 local residents nominated Wimbledon Chase Primary School to win one of the top awards in the school category.
Wimbledon Chase came third just behind Dundonald Primary School who won second prize and Pelham Primary School who won first prize. All the schools involved in the competition helped encourage local residents to increase the amount they recycle.
Councillor Judy Saunders said: "We want as many people as possible to recycle as much as they can. Increasing the amount we all recycle is good news for the public purse, as sending rubbish to landfill costs twice as much as recycling. If we all recycled everything we could, we would save £1,500,000 per year.
"It's fantastic to see school pupils learning about recycling and the benefits for the environment. I hope that the efforts of the school children can be imitated by residents in the borough to help tackle climate change and improve our environment."
Mayor of Merton, Councillor Agatha Akyigyina said: "Wimbledon Chase Primary School is a fantastic place for children to come and study. The commitment of the pupils and teachers is inspirational. It was a great pleasure to present the school with the 3rd place award and I applaud the children and school staff for their dedication to recycling. By starting to recycle from an early age, we are more likely to continue this good habit in our later lives."
