Wimbledon Fan Arrested After Banana Incident

Pensioner is given police bail

A Wimbledon fan has been arrested after a banana was allegedly thrown onto the field during the Dons' match against Port Vale on Thursday (January 24).

The 74-year-old man was arrested at the match, but was later released on police bail to report at a later date.

Bananas were thrown onto football pitches as racist gestures in the 1980s. But this incident seemed to be sparked by a decision by the referee, who was white.

Police had used TV footage to review the incident, as the match was screened live on Sky TV.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw after Jack Midson had put Wimbledon 2-0 ahead in the first half. For Wimbledon match reports - click here.
