Annual Green Fair Marks Its 30th Birthday

Event takes place in Wimbledon town centre

An annual Green Fair - The Fete of the Earth - celebrates its 30th anniversary on Saturday May 18.

Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition/CND has been staging this fair annually without a break and has raised tens of thousands of pounds to support its campaigns.

The plant stall, which has become a feature of the event, is still run by WDC/CND Secretary Joanna Bazley. "I grow plants because I enjoy it," she said. "It is satisfying to find the same customers coming back year after year and I am proud to know that my plants must have raised at least £15,000 over the years".

"This year growing conditions have been difficult and seedlings may be on the small side", said
Joanna, "but there will still be a good range of tomatoes, bedding plants, house plants, perennials and shrubs".

With the closure of the Community Centre, the home of the Fete for many years, the Fete will be back where it started, St Marks Church Hall, Compton Road (behind Wimbledon Library) and will run from 11am until 2pm. And to celebrate the anniversary, admission will be free.
