Chance To Have A Go At Morris Dancing

Wimbledon-based Morris Men invite newcomes

Greensleeves Morris Men, Wimbledon's own Morris dancing club, will run a series of Friday open evenings in September and October for first time and returning dancers to join in the fun of Morris dancing.

"Morris dancing is an activity with everything - it's good exercise, it's traditional and has wonderful tunes and dances," said Chris Benson, Squire (leader) of Greensleeves Morris Men.

"We are a thriving club and we always get a great response whenever we perform on our local patch which includes Clapham, Wandsworth and Putney as well as Wimbledon, where we practice."

The open evening practice sessions will be held on Friday 20 September, Friday 27 September and Friday 4 October from 8pm to 10pm at South Wimbledon Community Centre, 78 Victory Road, SW19 IHN.

For those trying Morris dancing for the first time, loose clothing and trainers are suggested.

"Morris dancing is back in fashion,” Benson continued. “Our open evenings are the ideal way to sample the enjoyment of Morris dancing – no experience is needed; just bring your energy and enthusiasm!"

Founded in 1926, Greensleeves (www.greensleevesmorris.org.uk) is London's longest established Morris dancing club and has been based in Wimbledon for the past 30 years.

Beginners are welcome and enquiries can be addressed to the club secretary (known as a Bagman) David Cooling on 07500993993 or bagman@greensleevesmorris.org.uk.
