Wimbledon Park Golfers Reject AELTC Offer

Long-standing members offered £50,000 to end club's lease

Members of Wimbledon Park Golf Club have rejected a £50,000 offer from the All England Lawn Tennis Club to let them expand onto their ground.

The golfers were offered £25m to end their lease in five years' time instead of letting it run until the 2041 expiry date.

The AELTC's offer would have meant golfers with at least 10 years' membership would have shared the lump sum - entitling each a payout of up to £50,000.

But a recent vote among the 800 members of the 117-year-old club in Home Park Road resulted in the committee rejecting the offer.

The AELTC bought the freehold of the golf course for £5.2m in 1993 and the club bought in a rule that new members would have to wait ten years before becoming eligible for any payout from the tennis club.
