Wimbledon Park Are School Bowls' Champs Again!

Merton Park hosts inter-school bowling competition

Primary schools from across Merton went head to head, competing for the prized trophy in the borough's inter-school bowling competition in John Innes Park, home of Merton Park Bowls Club.

Merton, Merton Park, Mitcham and Wimbledon Park bowls clubs have been coaching children from Cranmer, Joseph Hood and Wimbledon Park schools since the season started in May. The hard training culminated in a knock-out competition where the winning team from Wimbledon Park school were presented a trophy and medals by John Tucker, president of Surrey County Bowls Association (see right).

The competition follows a hugely successful inaugural battle of the bowls last year when Wimbledon Park won that competition too.

Barry Willimgham from Wimbledon Park Bowls Club said: "It has been great to be involved in coaching the youngsters this season and to build on the success of last year's competition. Lawn bowls is a sport for everyone of any age and seeing these children enjoy competing out in the park is fantastic to see.

"All the Merton bowls clubs are working hard to introduce as many children as possible to this great sport. It has been wonderful working with these schools and we hope to work with more of the borough's schools in the future."
