Owners change application for Brewery Tap changes

Amended plans to alter the historic Brewery Tap pub in Wimbledon Village, involving the creation of two flats, will be heard at the council's planning meeting on Wednesday (March 17).

Owners Enterprise Inns put the original plans forward to the council in December, involving a rear extension and conversion of the existing accommodation on the first and second floor.

But last month they submitted amended plans involving building toilets in the basement. There would still be a disabled WC on the ground floor, but there would be more space for a bar and kitchen.

The new plans also alter a planned external glazed stairwell to improve its appearance. It is understood council officers have recommended the plans are approved, subject to certain conditions.

Enterprise have already given notice to lessee Garry Mallen, that they do not want to renew his lease for the High Street pub (pictured left).

Regulars at the Brewery Tap, run by resident tenants John and Heather Grover for 15 years, have been running a campaign to keep the pub as it is.

The local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has also been campaigning against the plans, as they remove the existing tenant's accommodation. CAMRA campaigners fear for the long-term future of a pub without a resident landlord.

Any comments on the plans must be received by the council by March 13.
