Wimbledon RFC On The Hunt For New Players

Another productive warm up for the Dons

Wimbledon had a second productive pre-season warm-up game on August 22, against Barnes from National 2, one league higher than their own.

In the first half it was one-traffic with Barnes’ highly organised pack totally dominating, so denying Wimbledon any possession and setting up five well-taken tries.

With coach Nick Easter in France on duty with England it was fellow Harlequin and backs coach Nick Evans, together with 1st XV captain, Neil Hallett, and skipper for the day, Shawn Renwick, to try and sort things out at half time and get some cohesion in their hastily assembled side.

Whatever they said clearly worked and with the Wimbledon players gradually getting to know each other, they achieved a well-deserved second half draw with three tries apiece.

It was much the same for Dons’ 2nd team; completely under Barnes' cosh throughout the first half, they re-organised and fought back well to score four good tries in the second.

There are no games next weekend but training continues in earnest on Tuesdays and Thursdays in preparation for the first league game on 5th Sept. at home to Shelford. Anyone interested in joining the squad should turn up for training at 7pm at Wimbledon’s Barham Road ground. (0208 946 3156).
