Town centre improvement works on track
Major roadworks in Merton, including those in Wimbledon town centre, will be suspended from Wednesday (November 24) until Monday January 3 to ease congestion during the Christmas season.
But Merton council says the improvement works for Wimbledon town centre will continue following the festive period and are scheduled for completion in 2012.
Merton Council’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: "To make life easier for our residents during the Christmas period, we have decided to suspend major roadworks for five weeks. We are committed to supporting local businesses and stopping roadworks should encourage more people into the town centre for all their festive needs.
"We appreciate residents' patience with the roadworks in Wimbledon and recognise the inconvenience this causes to road users and commuters. However we are on schedule to finish the works which will make Wimbledon a much better place for people to enjoy."
