Wimbledon Stadium Blaze Causes Alarm


Black smoke rises high into the skies above Wimbledon

Thick smoke was visible for miles above Wimbledon after a rubbish fire behind Wimbledon Greyhound stadium on Plough Lane on Tuesday (May 2).

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to the fire at a storage yard after more than 10 calls were made to London Fire Brigade’s ‘999’ control officers.

The Brigade was called at 12.30pm and the fire was under control by 3pm. Fire crews from Wimbledon, Tooting, Wandsworth and Battersea fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire (see right) is under investigation.
