Public Hearing Into Wimbledon Stadium

Rival plans are outlined to inspector

The public hearing into the future of Wimbledon Stadium, with rival proposals being put forward, has been taking place this week.

An independent assessor has been listening to arguments at Merton Civic Centre about Merton Council's proposed planning policies for the development of sites around the whole borough.

It includes the proposed policy for "sporting intensification" for the current greyhound stadium site at Plough Lane. This plan backs the building of a football stadium on the site.

AFC Wimbledon are backed by Galliard Homes, with plans to build a £16m 20,000 seater football stadium on the site.

But a 'We Want Wimbledon' campaign group is backing plans to transform the stadium into the "Royal Ascot" of greyhound racing.

The inspector will announce his decision later in the year, possibly around April.
