Wimbledon Schools Hit By Strike

Merton Council services affected

Many schools in Wimbledon were closed and other local services hit as public sector workers staged a day of strikes on Wednesday (November 30).

At least 15 local schools closed for the day and others were partially closed. The Wimbledon schools which closed were:

Primary schools: All Saints, Bishop Gilpin, Garfield, Hollymount, Holy Trinity, Joseph Hood, Poplar, St John Fisher, St Mary's, St Matthew's, West Wimbledon, Wimbledon Park.

Secondary schools: Ricards Lodge, Rutlish and Wimbledon College.

Partial closures affected Dundonald and Merton Park primary schools.

Merton council also said most household waste and recycling collections would be a day later than normal.

Councillor Debbie Shears, the leader of Merton Conservative group, said: "People working in all sectors are currently facing tough times. It is therefore regrettable that the unions have decided to take this action which could severely inconvenience residents in Merton, including many hard working families with school-age children.

"We recognise there are differing views on the latest offer made by the Government on public sector reforms. However we believe the best way to resolve this is through continued negotiation and not industrial action."
