Wimbledon Tennis Players Taking Part In International Event

Local club will compete in European Senior competition

Players from Wimbledon’s Westside Lawn Tennis Club are targeting international success at Spain’s La Manga Club next month.

The Wimbledon club’s men’s 35 and over team will be among the competitors at the 2016 European Senior Tennis Club Championships, which will take place in Murcia, south-east Spain, from September 19-24.

Wimbledon’s quintet of Philip Mardh, Austin Coventry, Andrew Birse, Paul Mattson and Jacques Malan will pit their tennis wits against teams from Hampton-in-Arden Tennis Club in Solihull, Latvia, Spain and two sides from Holland for the chance to become European champions at La Manga Club – one of the world’s elite sports and leisure resorts.

Organised by Tennis Europe, the event will feature men and women from its 49 tennis federations competing at the award-winning resort’s extensive 28-court academy for titles in six different age categories.

Founded in 1983, the championships are open to men over the age of 35 and women aged 40-plus from national champion clubs and the runners-up from the previous year in an international team competition across various age categories, as well as teams nominated by Tennis Europe member nations.

Each country can be represented by a maximum of three clubs in every sector at La Manga Club, with teams comprising between four to seven players for men’s categories and two to five for women.

The 2016 version of the clay court event will again feature a strong challenge from England with two teams from Surrey and one each from south-west London, the West Midlands, Somerset, Yorkshire and Leicestershire also taking part.
