Is Taking Up Running Your New Year Resolution?

Women-only running classes on Wimbledon Common

To help fight the ‘winter blues’ during the winter months, Common Runners - part of England Athletics’ drive to get more people nationwide into running – is offering 12-week running women-only courses for complete beginners and improvers on Wimbledon Common.

The courses start on Monday January 6 until Thursday April 3. Free trial sessions are available to those who would like to try out a class before committing to a course.

The women-only courses are small, friendly and for all ages and abilities. They take place during the day, straight after school drop-off and are ideal for mums or home-workers who want to learn to run and enjoy the great outdoors.

Caroline Dunleavy, owner of Common Runners, said: "Whether you want to get fitter or faster, lose weight, run a 5k or stay motivated, our beginners' and improvers' running courses will guarantee to get you up and running, come rain or shine.

"They are ideal for those who want to learn to run with similar ability runners in a fun and relaxed environment. The groups are social and we encourage all runners to practice their running steps at their own pace at our social runs."

Beginner runners who cannot run for more than a few minutes at a time but who would like to run steadily for 20 minutes will be guided, supported and advised on how to run progressively and safely. They will be given tips on running form, pace, injury prevention, stretching and rest and recovery. Beginner classes are on Mondays (9.30am) and Thursdays (10.45am).

Improver runners who can run steadily for at least 20 minutes but who would like to run for longer and faster will be advised on technique, pace, injury prevention and stretching before embarking on some speed, hill and endurance work in a light-hearted and encouraging atmosphere. Improver classes are on Mondays (10.45am), Tuesday (9.30am) and Thursdays (9.30am).

Social runs take place every Wednesday at 10.30am and are free to those who have signed up for a 12-week course. Drop-in sessions are available at the social runs only.
