Pensioner In Serious Condition After Being Knocked Over By Alleged Thief


Woman is injured as 'shoplifter' flees the scene

An 83-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital after she was injured following a man fleeing the scene of an alleged theft in Wimbledon.

Police were called at 2.11pm on Wednesday (August 20) to reports of shoplifting in St Georges Road.

Police said two men were seen by store security inside a department store shoplifting.

One man was detained by security staff at the scene but the second was able to run from the scene and, as he made his escape, an elderly woman was knocked over in Wimbledon Hill Road receiving serious injuries.

London Ambulance service attended and she was taken to a south London hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

Robert John Paul, aged 40, of Waldemar Road, Wimbledon, was arrested at the scene and later charged with one count of theft from a shop. He was bailed to appear Wimbledon Magistrates' court on the 3 September.

Steven Bishop, 36, also of Waldemar Road, was later charged with Section 20 GBH without intention and theft. He has been bailed to appear before Wimbledon Magistrates at a later date.
