A sizeable squad was available for this warm-up game so many faces from the all-conquering Wimbledon team that last season secured promotion to National League 2, with a good number still to return from holiday/injury.
However, many of the players who contributed to Dons’ success last season have been lured away by clubs with a far larger player budget. However it is hoped that on the evidence of this Saturday’s performance many of them of been replaced by equally exciting new faces.
After a hectic and mistake-ridden opening ten minutes as the new and the old players got to know each other, even though they were swapped around every 30 minutes, they began to play as a strong attacking team. It soon became clear they would overwhelm a spirited Horsham side – a team just promoted to the league that Wimbledon dominated last season – and Dons did just that, producing a 57-15 victory.
Next week Wimbledon will be sending a 1st and 2nd XV to Chinnor for another warm-up game.
