185 Years Young: Pub Group Marks Its Birthday

Share your memories and have a pint with Young's

To celebrate 185 years of the pub group, it’s time to share your memories from your local Young’s pub - whether it’s a romantic proposal, the Queen Ma’am pulling her first pint or the time John Young bought a pair of live wallabies into the pub, submit your photos on social media tagging @youngspubs using the hashtag #185YearsYoungs.

This year, Young’s has taken a trip down memory lane, searching the archives for pictures of its oldest establishments, noting how they’ve changed through the years (or haven’t changed, in some cases). The pub group now wants to share memories with their loyal customers to mark 185 years in the business.

One of the first pubs in the Young's chain was the Rose & Crown in Wimbledon Village, which it bought in 1832 - a year after it began brewing at the Ram Brewery.

Nearby, the Crooked Billet came into the Young's family in 1881. It was rumoured that Dick Turpin, during his time as a highwayman holding up coaches that travelled through Putney and Barnes, frequented the pub and there is said to be have a different kind of spirit who likes to spend her time in our cellar so don't be afraid if you hear some bumps behind the bar.

If nostalgia doesn’t float your boat, simply head to your local Young’s pub on September 22 to celebrate with a free pint of your favourite beer – just sign up at youngs.co.uk/youngsday.

Served in a commemorative glass, Young’s have created a beer for the occasion; Young’s Autumn Gold. Sip on a pint of fine, golden pale ale with notes of pine, citrus and warming caramel.

Selected pubs have birthday treats in store, including The Alma in Wandsworth are combining their birthday celebrations with the anniversary of the Battle of the Alma. Meanwhile the Hand in Hand in Wimbledon is hosting a Mad Hatters Beer Party, with ale tea pots, jam tarts and hats galore.

  • Young's pubs in the Wimbledon area are: The Alexandra (Wimbledon Hill Road), Crooked Billet, The Dog and Fox (Wimbledon High Street), The Hand in Hand (Wimbledon Common), Hare and Hounds (Upper Richmond Road West and The Rose and Crown (Wimbledon Village).
