Dons Bounce Back To The Top

Altrincham 0 v Wimbledon 2

Danny Kedwell scored at either end of the first half to give the Dons a 2-0 win at Altrincham on Tuesday (November 10) and send them back to the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier.

The talismanic frontman scored his 11th goal of the season after just 26 seconds, latching on to Ricky Wellard’s through ball and firing home from just inside the area in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

And his 12th of the season came on the strike of the half-time whistle, when Rashid Yussuff surged from midfield, played in Sam Hatton on the right flank and his cross to Kedwell was volleyed home with aplomb.

Wimbledon had by far the better of the game and were never particularly troubled by their bottom-of-the-table hosts, with Michael Twiss going closest for the home side only to see his effort ruled out for offside.

And Yussuff could have sealed the Dons’ win late on but his shot cannoned back off the bar, hit goalkeeper in the closing stages but his Stuart Coburn and unfortunately for the Dons rebounded away from goal.

The result was due reward for the 250-or-so Wimbledon fans who made the long midweek trek north and formed quarter of the crowd. They face a similar journey on Saturday (13 November) for a league game before facing a shorter journey to Ebbsfleet in the FA Cup replay that has been moved to Thursday 18 November for live coverage on ESPN.

Should they win that replay, then the Dons’ 2nd round tie against either Stevenage Borough or Milton Keynes Dons will also be shown live on television, this time ITV, with a 12:50pm kick-off on Saturday 27 November.
